I have a bucket list of weddings that I would love to shoot. On this list was ‘The Lord of the Rings wedding’ which I can now say I have ticked off.
Elycia and Andrew were married at Tewin Bury Farm with a The Lord of the Rings themed wedding. J. R. R. Tolkien’s world means a great deal to Elycia as she grew up listening to the stories due to it being something that she and her dad share a love for. With an outdoor ceremony followed by a Bahá’í Faith blessing, it was a beautiful wedding celebrating Elycia and Andrew’s love as well as
Here’s Elycia to tell you more about them, their amazing day and why they had a The Lord of the Rings wedding.
After 18 months of being together, Andrew popped the question overlooking St Mary’s Church in Hitchin by the river. As soon as we got engaged, the planning started pretty soon after. We both didn’t want to hang about, and had talked about our future together before getting engaged. We’ve now been together over 3 years now, nearly four.
We both wanted an intimate ceremony, and it had to be in keeping with our awesome theme. Tewin Bury Farm ticked all of that, as well as being surrounded by the most gorgeous nature and river. Tolkien is my literary hero, I grew up having the book read to me as a child and so there is a certain nostalgia and a very special place in my heart for The Lord of the Rings. It’s hard to say what decoration we loved most, but it’s always amusing to see a cardboard cutout of Gandalf and Bilbo amidst our photos!
The dress was chosen at Clifford Burr Bridal store (by Diane Harbridge) and once I put it on, I just thought ‘elven queen’. It was so unique! Andrew really wanted a classic three piece suit.
I wanted accessories to complement the elvish look I was going for. I didn’t want the tiara, as I preferred more of the bohemian look with the accessories. The hair vine idea, I saw in a wedding video and thought it looked stunning. With the bridesmaids, they matched with a golden hair leaf in their hair and gifted rose gold bracelets they received the morning of the wedding. Andrew, Dads, Groomsman/Best Man matched with the ‘Leaves of Lothlorien’ pin from the Lord of the Rings.
Everyone loved hearing the music from the film trilogy. It added the extra bit of magic. We loved being able to have the ceremony outside, on a beautiful Summer’s day too. I always wanted to have the reading from The Corinthians (13:4) which is a popular choice for many weddings, but it is just so beautiful. Of course, we had to have at least one from LOTR and, my Dad would always have been the best person to read from our favourite book of my childhood. We also had a short poem, which was influenced by, surprisingly (note of sarcasm detected) Pinterest!
Our first dance was You Do Something to Me – Paul Weller. I listened to this song years ago, and always said to myself I’d have that one. Luckily for me, Andrew loved it too. I love rock music!
Elycia’s Thoughts of Clare Tam-Im Photography
OMG, if anyone reading this is still deciding on a photographer, please pick Clare! Clare is incredibly talented, and a fantastic person to work with. I wanted a photographer who used more creative photography styles, and not all cheese and awkwardly placed left (or is it right?) feet. My decision was finalised when ‘Lord of the Rings’ was on Clare’s bucket list, it was important that the photographer we both chose loved LOTR as otherwise, we’d risk the photos not capturing the magic.
We have had so many compliments from the guests, and people who we didn’t even know on the natural photography style, and the quality of them. So much so, we were front page on Herts/Bed Wedding Magazine. Again, I can’t pick one favourite but a few of them would be, the photo of me with my bridesmaids laughing together; photo of my Mum laughing at me during my Dad’s speech; the closeup of Andrew & I looking into each others eyes; a us both on the bridge. The photography of the details, and decoration (loved the signpost outside) was extraordinary.
Elycia’s Favourite Part of The Day
The moment I remember so fondly was just before I walked down the aisle I was so nervous. I heard the music for my cue, and as I walked down with Dad thinking ‘please don’t fall over’ I looked up and saw Andrew. All of a sudden, my worries and nerves vanished and I felt this moment of pure tranquility and calmness. At the moment, I just knew this was the best beginning of our story together. Of course we loved the whole day, but for me this moment stood out to me.
Elycia’s Advice For Engaged Couples
Remember, this day is a celebration of your love together. Your love is unique and special, to you so don’t feel you have to do everything by the book. On the day, take some time with one another alone (even if a few minutes) just to take it all in.
